Department of Materials Engineering, Glass and Ceramics
We are special:
Every mobile phone and every car needs ceramic materials in order to work. This is a possible area of specialisation for future engineers at the WesterWaldCampus - making them sought-after experts in in functional materials in the automotive or mobile communications industry, in medical technology or even in Aerospace. There are, of course, other possibilities: students may alternatively elect to specialise in refractory or building materials, or in sanitaryware and Fine Ceramics.
The study programmes in Materials Engineering, Glass and Ceramics at the WesterWaldCampus of Koblenz University of Applied Sciences are unique in Germany. We have a small subject-group with a first-class supervision ratio. Glass and ceramics materials engineers have excellent opportunities in the job market, as demand is three times greater than the number of our graduates. The relatively small groups of students and the personal guidance of the professors enable students to identify their strengths and to pursue their interests with a high degree of success that is untypical for most engineering subjects. The practice- and industry-oriented study-programme gives students the benefit of many partnerships with renowned companies in a comprehensive industrial network.
It is commonplace for students to carry out projects for their Bachelor (B.Eng.) and Master (M.Eng.) dissertations in industry. It is also possible to study the B.Eng. course in Materials Engineering, Glass and Ceramics as a sandwich course, whereby three of the eight semesters are spent in partner industrial companies. This experience-led approach to learning is ideal for young people who wish to follow a career in industry right from the start. The M.Eng. degree in Ceramics Science and Engineering is offered in collaboration with the University of Koblenz.
Our department is uniquely well equipped with analytical equipment, offering an applied research environment second to none in Germany. Our research benefits from close co-operation with the European Centre for Refractories (ECREF) and the Research Institute for Glass and Ceramics (FGK), both partners in the Ceramics Education and Research Centre (ECREF) in Höhr-Grenzhausen.
